In 2020, Hildie was approached by the Ninilchik Traditional Council to provide architectural design services for a new Childcare building to be located on NTC owned land in Ninilchik, AK. The tribe had been looking forward to having a full service childcare facility conveniently located for the community for a number of years.
Initially, the building's program was to include a toddler room, a pre-school age classroom, a nap room and an indoor playground. Additional program spaces included a lobby, teacher lounge, nurse's office, a lunchroom, office and support spaces.
Building codes mandated that the facility be fully sprinklered. The available water pressure was inadequate, so a basement was added to provide space for a Tank Room and Fire Suppression equipment. The community also desired to cook some meals in the building, so a commercial kitchen was added to the program. The interior spaces were revised to accommodate the commercial kitchen by scaling down the children's dining area.
The project was bid in early 2021 and construction was underway by summer. The building was completed and occupied in the fall of 2021. The one-story 3,000 square foot building is wood framed on a concrete foundation with a partial basement. The site development includes a fenced outdoor playground. and a substantial covered entry area for child drop-off and waiting.
